Goal Setting - Achieving your dreams

"A goal is a dream with a deadline." - Napoleon Hill

Who can't relate to the complete lack of inspiration when faced with setting goals. Most of us have had to set goals for our jobs because our managers required it every review period; and the predominate goal was “To keep this stinking job!”

Of course, we all set goals on a daily basis, we just don't call them goals. People in pain and suffering from depression consider getting out of bed a major accomplishment. Getting dressed is another major undertaking. If the determination to accomplish just those two things was made the night before, that is a goal. And for some, those baby steps are the beginning of healing and the road to a great life.

So exactly what is the first step to setting goals? Take four pieces of paper and at the top of each sheet write the following headings: My Body, My Home, My Relationships and My Work. Now for each topic write, This is what I desire regarding my and insert topic.

This is where you go crazy. Everything is possible in these lists. There can be any number of ways to complete I want for each category. Put down everything to comes to your mind. If you get stuck on one topic, move on to the next. This is not a test. There are no wrong answers. The list is totally subjective and applies only to you.

Now focus on each I want and write the reason why you want each of those things. Why you want something defines the essence of what you want by clarifying your want.

This process will help you focus on the areas of your life that are most important to your life. This focus of your attention helps you create your desire.

For example:

I want to return to my ideal body weight,

because I feel best when I am at that weight.

After you have made your lists, set them aside for a day. Now, go back and reread what you wrote. Are the wants still the same or is there some clarifying changes needed? Remember, the reason for setting a goal in the first place is to accomplish that goal. You want to make sure that when the goal is accomplished, it is what you want.

Do not get hung up on the accomplishment of a goal. The process of writing your goals and getting to the why of your goal is the main process here. Oftentimes by putting your attention on a subject you are activating energy which will draw to you people, places and things which will help you accomplish your goals.

I did it! I actually wrote down all of the categories you suggested and wrote my "I want...because" statements. I think it is so important do write down goals because it makes them more "official". I love these categories, because it made me think of something I've never thought of before and that is my home. I actually wrote that I want my home to be in order, but not perfect because I don't want the immediate (dishes) to overtake the important (time with the girls). I truly believe this will help me as I decide how to spend my moments each day. Thanks for the tips!

oh, PS, I've a bottle of the magical mead in my cupboard, waiting for an "occasion". Maybe A's 30 birthday, next week, is it, eh? One's coming up for your kiddo, too, isn't it?
